Volunteer Policy

ADOPTED: FEBRUARY 21, 2006

REVIEWED AND REVISED: FEBRUARY 11, 2019

The Moweaqua Public Library District recognizes and appreciates the hard work and unique talents that the volunteers of the community offer to the Moweaqua Public Library District throughout the year.

A"volunteer" is defined as anyone who chooses to perform services for the Library without compensation or expectation of compensation and who performs volunteer services at the direction of the Library staff. A volunteer is not an employee of the Library.  The volunteers described in this policy are different from the Friends of the Library volunteers who are governed by their own policies and bylaws.

Individuals ages 18 and over are eligible for volunteer service.  Youth ages 11-17 may apply to serve as volunteers for designated youth programs, special projects or events.  Youth that wish to volunteer at the library must complete a volunteer application and have written parental approval.

Volunteers will be assigned at the discretion of the head librarian during library hours.  All volunteers are selected based on their qualifications in relation to the needs of the library.  Hours of volunteer service will be determined by the head librarian in discussion with the volunteer.

Volunteers are supervised by the head librarian but are under the direction of the staff member on duty.  Volunteers are expected to act in accordance with library policies and to reflect positive customer service attitudes to all library patrons.

Volunteers may assist the Library in a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting with the Summer Reading program

  • Providing assistance at special programs

  • Sorting, straightening, and organizing materials

  • Shelving

  • Mentoring

  • Tutoring

All work performed by volunteers is done without compensation and at the risk to the volunteer.

The library does not carry insurance that protects the volunteer in the case of accidental injury.

The Library reserves the right to terminate any volunteer who neglects or refuses assignments or who violates any Library or volunteer policies and/or procedures.
